Perfect spot to get sand between your toes

I was chatting to a good friend about what makes Byron such a special place. Is it the beach? The gorgeous places to eat and drink? Is it the super-friendly and relaxed people you meet and who run the amazing businesses there? For me, it’s a combination of all of the above and why I always have a fab time in Byron whether I visit for a few hours or stay for a week.

Breakfast or Brunch? No matter what time you finally wake up, head to The Farm

The Farm - perfect for breakfast or brunch

If you are an early riser like me, Byron is a fab spot to get up early and head out for a walk along the beach.  Love a sleep in?  No worries, breakfast at most places seems to stretch out to become brunch. The Farm is a perfect spot to enjoy both.  The Farm is a firm fave of mine.

Go for a wander...

You can choose to takeaway delicious hot coffee and buttery pastries and head off for a stroll (let the kids run wild!) or dine in and enjoy the view.  If you choose to dine in, super friendly staff are always buzzing around, which means you can relax while you order from the locavore menu.

Pick up provisions for a picnic

A lot of the fresh produce comes directly from the small lot farmers who share the space and I think you can taste the difference!

Brunch at The Farm at its finest

Time for a Sunday stroll – Bangalow & Newrybar

Gorgeous Newrybar

After enjoying a sleep in, big breakfast and a strong coffee, if you feel the need to walk it off or just go for a wander – take the short drive to beautiful Bangalow and Newrybar.  Nestled in the hinterland behind Byron, these two tiny villages are home to gorgeous homewares, more great cafes and some fab fashion. Some of my fave spots to visit/ eat in and around Bangalow and Newrybar are:

Henrix & Harlow

Newrybar Merchants

More of the gorgeous Newrybar Merchants

Shop

Bisque Hendrix & Harlow Island Luxe Driftlab For a beautiful collective of retailers head to Newrybar Merchants, home to Art Park, Shannon Fricke, The Book Room, Minimosh, Tigmi Trading, Beautiflora, Nikau, Fate & Fortune and firm fave The Society Inc.

Stop for a break at Harvest...

Eat

Our Corner Kitchen The Italian Diner Harvest Federal DOMA Café

The Rails

Time for a drink – fab spots for a drink or two, maybe just settle in for the afternoon

After all of that eating, shopping and walking if you are feeling a little parched head back to Byron for a cold drink or two.  For a laid-back afternoon under the trees, try starting with a Bloody Mary at The Treehouse.  My friend and I both settled in for some quality people-watching, savouring ours.  Order extra-hot if you're feeling game! Nestled next to the beach, and serving wood-fired pizzas, Treehouse is a perfect spot to relax for a couple of hours with a drink or two. Treehouse If a pub and a cold brew are more your scene, wander in to the Beach Hotel (fab views, live music, did I mention the view?), The Rails (The Railway Friendly Barl) or The Great Northern (for an old school pub, keep an eye out for the great bands playing here). The Beach Hotel The Rails (The Railway Friendly Bar) The Great Northern If you’re not a fan of pubs, Miss Margarita is a fab little spot near the beach serving a range of delicious drinks and Mexican food.

The name says it all...

Miss Margarita Whew!  That is one hefty list, but there are just so many great places to eat/drink/shop and relax! Have you got any firm faves in Byron? Enjoy xx

As a mum, I clearly remember the moment when my then 3-year-old decided to choose her own clothes, or should I say OUTFIT. It was an OUTFIT because it was accompanied by a demand in a VERY loud voice from my former happy-go-lucky toddler that from now on she would only wear party dresses and ballet shoes. No more sensible sandals or runners. No more jeans, no more shorts and certainly no more blue or black. Just pink. Maybe purple occasionally. Mostly just pink. Oh and sparkles. Lots of sparkles. For a navy-loving, black -wearing tomboy this was really harsh news! I loathed pink. Could not stand purple. And certainly was not a sparkles kind of person. In that moment, I chose to get a grip. This was not about me.  Or my taste. This was about the little person who right before my eyes was growing up. Into a little person with fave colours, a personal style (sparkles, pink and all) all of her own. With all of this in mind, I thought I'd share a couple of places and spaces we visit to foster the creative little spirits in our house (in case you're wondering, because I know I would be, this is NOT a sponsored post).

lovely treasures from This Grand Life, Skittle & Mouse and others at the Mummy Tree Markets

Home again after a lovely morning at The Mummy Tree markets in sunny Bris-Vegas. It's always such a lovely crowd, friendly stall holders, fab customers, loads of (free!) entertainment for the kidlets.  What more could you ask for? I found some fab gear for my kids, including a gorgeous banner from Oh Deer Me!, and had a lot of lovely chat with my talented neighbour Skittle & Mouse. Other faves included The Three Birds, and little windsor.  *Sigh*, so many gorgeous treasures! Hope you are having a fab weekend, and if it's still a little chilly in your neck of the woods, maybe you could do some couch market shopping... Enjoy xx

Gorgeous finds at handmade markets...

Gorgeous finds at handmade markets...

This year I made the commitment to a Year of Ethical Fashion (check it out here). As part of this, I have been exploring and supporting all things handmade.  Alongside the design and production of my range for This Grand Life, I am a huge fan of handmade.  I am happy to chat about, promote and support other artists and designers. It is (for the most part) a big supportive crafty community.  The support and love of artistic endeavours in all forms is one of my favourite things about the creative community. As one of my lovely sisters put it, 'oh, you've found your people!'. She is spot on!  This year I have taken my family along to some of my favourite markets: Perth Upmarket,  Market Girl, The Finders Keepers, The Mummy Tree Markets, Brisstyle and the Rock a Buy Markets. We have found fabulous handmade puppets, sand art, gorgeous hand-made clothes, eaten delicious cupcakes, sipped tea and throughly enjoyed ourselves along the way. With Christmas coming up fast, why not make your own commitment to buy something handmade this year? Enjoy xx
Hello Spring!  The first day of the month feels like a fresh start in a lot of ways. It's the first day of Spring and sunny Bris-Vegas is being true to form, the days feel warmer and brighter already. The kids are well and truly into the swing of things at school. I am now unpacked, settled and well, also appear to be wearing the same thing day in day out. Well, at least it feels that way! Skinny jeans and top, plus boots. The main reason for my 'uniform' is that it's easy to throw on jeans and a top and be out the door super quick. No easy feat when you also need to get four kids out the door in some semblance of order before lunchtime. So, it was perfect timing to read about the gorgeous Fox in Flats Style Dare for September! I signed up in a flash... Here's the lowdown...

It's been a little quiet on the blog front here... The main reason is we are gearing up for Perth Upmarket on the weekend. Preparing for our favourite farmers markets, Mt Claremont,  we are now there each fortnight! Plus we are getting set for Marketgirl! TGL FindusinMarch2014

#Year of Ethical Fashion

#Year of Ethical Fashion

Happy New Year! Its been a busy start tot he year in this neck of the woods, with markets, lots of sewing, creating and photos, returning to the office, and thinking about what the year holds. This year, after reading a fab post from the lovely Pip Lincolne at Meet Me at Mikes,  I have decided to take up the challenge of ethical fashion. Here's how it goes... When I'm looking for things to wear (for the kids or myself) I will only: a) Buy from ethical makers or b) Buy second-hand or c) Make it myself  or d) Wear things I already own or e) Borrow or swap garments with friends (credit to Pip @ Meet Me at Mikes for the fab words) I had already started down this path last year whilst sewing and creating clothes for my own little label (This Grand Life). Each piece takes me time (especially gorgeous little dresses and boardies), and so I have a real appreciation for anything handmade.  It's a labour of love some of the time! This is countered by having four little kids to clothe, and not wanting to spend a small fortune each time one of the kids has a growth spurt (a very regular occurrence in my house). I had started to introduce the kids to the world of op shops and vintage fashion, along with teaching them how to sew (a hand life skill for boys and girls!). Until I read Pip's post, I had kind of left in at that, a nice thought and some good intentions. So I decided to make the make the pledge to have a Year of Ethical Fashion, and in the process hopefully help the kids learn about making good choices along the way... Enjoy xx

I am basking in the glow of a daydream come true. After years of sewing /creating for my own pleasure and for my little tribe, I decided to take the plunge and start a boutique design label. Featuring fab frocks, sunny sun dresses, cool shorts, super cute totes, brooches...and a whole lot more, This Grand Life, the label became a reality. This weekend I braved The Finders Keepers market in sunny Sydney, and it was...wonderful, terrifying and inspirational all at the same time. Within minutes of opening, my nerves disappeared, and I didn't stop smiling all day. Hello from Finders Keepers! Have you got a daydream? A dream trip? A great idea? Enjoy xx
