Fab fashion finds for teens & tweens

Fab fashion finds for teens & tweens

Hello!

It has been super busy here, between school stuff, studying, working, designing/creating, life in general really.

We are also heading into birthday season!  In our little family, the ladies are all born at the same time of the year.

All three of us will be celebrating our special day…very soon! Hurrah for us!

Which brings me to birthday parties.

It’s fast becoming that time of the year.

Birthday parties, BBQs, playdates at the park and picnic. As we all come out of hibernation, the party season is starting in earnest.

To help you out I thought I would share some fab fashion finds for tween/ teen girls.

Save the pic to your phone, fab ideas for pressies or for the little ladies in your life. Check out H&M and Kido Store (two of our fave stores…and in case you are wondering…not sponsored!) for more fab finds.

Enjoy xx

lovely treasures from This Grand Life, Skittle & Mouse and others at the Mummy Tree Markets

lovely treasures from This Grand Life, Skittle & Mouse and others at the Mummy Tree Markets

Home again after a lovely morning at The Mummy Tree markets in sunny Bris-Vegas.

It’s always such a lovely crowd, friendly stall holders, fab customers, loads of (free!) entertainment for the kidlets.  What more could you ask for?

I found some fab gear for my kids, including a gorgeous banner from Oh Deer Me!, and had a lot of lovely chat with my talented neighbour Skittle & Mouse.

Other faves included The Three Birds, and little windsor.  *Sigh*, so many gorgeous treasures!

Hope you are having a fab weekend, and if it’s still a little chilly in your neck of the woods, maybe you could do some couch market shopping…

One of our most popular ranges in the This Grand Life kids clothing label are our sweet sundresses.

Using a couple of our faves at inspiration here is some style inspiration for summer days…

Gorgeous finds at handmade markets...

Gorgeous finds at handmade markets…

This year I made the commitment to a Year of Ethical Fashion (check it out here).

As part of this, I have been exploring and supporting all things handmade.  Alongside the design and production of my range for This Grand Life, I am a huge fan of handmade.  I am happy to chat about, promote and support other artists and designers. It is (for the most part) a big supportive crafty community.  The support and love of artistic endeavours in all forms is one of my favourite things about the creative community.

As one of my lovely sisters put it, ‘oh, you’ve found your people!’.

She is spot on!  This year I have taken my family along to some of my favourite markets: Perth Upmarket,  Market Girl, The Finders Keepers, The Mummy Tree Markets, Brisstyle and the Rock a Buy Markets.

We have found fabulous handmade puppets, sand art, gorgeous hand-made clothes, eaten delicious cupcakes, sipped tea and throughly enjoyed ourselves along the way.

With Christmas coming up fast, why not make your own commitment to buy something handmade this year?

Hello Spring!  The first day of the month feels like a fresh start in a lot of ways.

It’s the first day of Spring and sunny Bris-Vegas is being true to form, the days feel warmer and brighter already.

The kids are well and truly into the swing of things at school.

I am now unpacked, settled and well, also appear to be wearing the same thing day in day out.

Well, at least it feels that way!

Skinny jeans and top, plus boots. The main reason for my ‘uniform’ is that it’s easy to throw on jeans and a top and be out the door super quick. No easy feat when you also need to get four kids out the door in some semblance of order before lunchtime.

So, it was perfect timing to read about the gorgeous Fox in Flats Style Dare for September! I signed up in a flash…

Here’s the lowdown…

As a mum, I clearly remember the moment when my then 3-year-old decided to choose her own clothes, or should I say OUTFIT.

It was an OUTFIT because it was accompanied by a demand in a VERY loud voice from my former happy-go-lucky toddler that from now on she would only wear party dresses and ballet shoes.

No more sensible sandals or runners.

No more jeans, no more shorts and certainly no more blue or black.

Just pink.

Maybe purple occasionally.

Mostly just pink.

Oh and sparkles. Lots of sparkles.

For a navy-loving, black -wearing tomboy this was really harsh news!

I loathed pink.

Could not stand purple.

And certainly was not a sparkles kind of person.

In that moment, I chose to get a grip. This was not about me.  Or my taste.

This was about the little person who right before my eyes was growing up. Into a little person with fave colours, a personal style (sparkles, pink and all) all of her own.

With all of this in mind, I thought I’d share a couple of places and spaces we visit to foster the creative little spirits in our house (in case you’re wondering, because I know I would be, this is NOT a sponsored post).

#Year of Ethical Fashion

#Year of Ethical Fashion

Happy New Year!

Its been a busy start tot he year in this neck of the woods, with markets, lots of sewing, creating and photos, returning to the office, and thinking about what the year holds.

This year, after reading a fab post from the lovely Pip Lincolne at Meet Me at Mikes,  I have decided to take up the challenge of ethical fashion. Here’s how it goes…

When I’m looking for things to wear (for the kids or myself) I will only:

a) Buy from ethical makers or
b) Buy second-hand or
c) Make it myself  or
d) Wear things I already own or
e) Borrow or swap garments with friends

(credit to Pip @ Meet Me at Mikes for the fab words)

I had already started down this path last year whilst sewing and creating clothes for my own little label (This Grand Life). Each piece takes me time (especially gorgeous little dresses and boardies), and so I have a real appreciation for anything handmade.  It’s a labour of love some of the time!

This is countered by having four little kids to clothe, and not wanting to spend a small fortune each time one of the kids has a growth spurt (a very regular occurrence in my house).

I had started to introduce the kids to the world of op shops and vintage fashion, along with teaching them how to sew (a hand life skill for boys and girls!).

Until I read Pip’s post, I had kind of left in at that, a nice thought and some good intentions.

So I decided to make the make the pledge to have a Year of Ethical Fashion, and in the process hopefully help the kids learn about making good choices along the way…

I am basking in the glow of a daydream come true. After years of sewing /creating for my own pleasure and for my little tribe, I decided to take the plunge and start a boutique design label. Featuring fab frocks, sunny sun dresses, cool shorts, super cute totes, brooches…and a whole lot more, This Grand Life, the label became a reality.
This weekend I braved The Finders Keepers market in sunny Sydney, and it was…wonderful, terrifying and inspirational all at the same time. Within minutes of opening, my nerves disappeared, and I didn’t stop smiling all day.

Hello from Finders Keepers!

Have you got a daydream? A dream trip? A great idea?

A fab party frock from my new collection for This Grand Life...

A fab party frock from my new collection for This Grand Life…

I am super excited about this. No surprise really as I tend to get super excited about a lot of things (that would be that Pollyanna streak).

Spurred on by my family and friends I am in the process of designing and making a collection of fab frocks, gorgeous gear for little boys, sweet teeny baby gear and some other lovely treasures.

I have thought about doing something like this for years, but with working (I have a career in science), raising my little tribe (as gorgeous and wonderful as they are, four kids takes up a LOT of time) and trying to be a half-way lovely partner (thanks for the patience Big A), well there was not a whole lot of time left. For me. Or for a new project.

Or so I thought!

A few months ago I made the decision to start making the time, because this was important to me.

Turns out it was pretty easy once I made the commitment.  I have cut down internet time, tv time and streamlined things on the home-front).

So today, I am happy to announce I am now well and truly into it, and have been busily designing, making, photographing…

Stay tuned, photos and details will be posted here and on my Facebook page (duck over to this side—–> of my page to click ‘like’).

Have you got a project on the go or are you still waiting for the ‘right’ time?
